How to test and configure Festival: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Festival

The current voice of Stella is: "cmu_us_slt_cg"

To establish this voice as the Festival system default, position "cmu_us_slt_cg" at the top of the "default-voice-priority-list" towards the end of this file:

/usr/share/festival/voices.scm

To set this default voice for your user account add this line at the end of "~/.festivalrc"

(set! voice_default voice_cmu_us_slt_cg)

Here's more info to help you setup the high quality HTS voices in festival or any of the available voices.

Those Ubuntu forum instructions seem outdated and cause failures on my end due to incorrent syntax via the " ' " single-quote character in the recommended "(set! voice_default)" command.

Have you tried any different voices?

Any favorites?

Just tried "cmu_us_slt_arctic" and it's good, yet not as good in my opinion as Stella's current voice "cmu_us_slt_cg".

I've wasted a lot of time trying to get festival to use better voices. Those instructions didn't work to add HTS voices.

I filed a bug and came up with a workaround. If you really want to use festival on Ubuntu with great sounding voices, I recommend doing the workaround on here:
